2025 Sustainable painting series
My body of work explores the intersection of nature, experience, and material through sustainable abstract painting. Each piece is created using a combination of handmade paints and pigments, carefully developed from found natural materials such as earth, stone, charcoal, and plant matter. These pigments are combined with experimental binders to form a palette deeply rooted in the environments that inspire the work.
Themes of oceanic landscapes, cave waterfalls, water ripples, and shifting textures run throughout the collection. Rather than aiming for realism, I explore the feeling and rhythm of these elements—how light flickers across a water surface, or how layers of earth hold a story in their cracks and sediment.
Sustainability is embedded in my process. I work almost exclusively on recycled canvases, and the base layers are created using wall grout mixed with sand, soil, and other found textures. These foundations are rough, tactile, and intentionally imperfect—offering a landscape to build upon, echoing natural erosion and geological layering.
By using discarded materials and reimagined surfaces, my practice challenges the conventions of traditional painting while staying grounded in ecological mindfulness. Each piece becomes not just a visual experience, but a physical trace of place, process, and environmental respect.
The titles of the works are in Japanese, a choice influenced by the use of gold accents throughout the collection, which draw inspiration from kintsugi—the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Just as kintsugi embraces flaws and transforms them into something beautiful, the gilded elements in my paintings honor imperfection, repair, and the passage of time. Naming the pieces in Japanese is both a nod to this philosophy and a way to connect the visual language of the work with a cultural tradition that values resilience, transience, and the beauty of restoration.
